Just recently quit taking guitar lessons.?

I've been taking guitar lessons, for the past year or so, and have just recently quit mostly due to financial reasons. (Lessons were 100 bucks a month and as a young adult, paying for school and other various bills takes precedent over such things). But my question is basically to those who have come to teach themselves guitar without a physical teacher teaching them. What ways did you go about progressing in guitar and improving your skills? I'm mostly looking for not neccesarily easy ways, but just ways that won't cost much if anything other than alot of hard work and time spent. Any suggestions would be gladly appreciated friends :)
